ALTINKUM PROPERTY FINDER
Living in Turkey
One question we are often asked is “what is it really like living in Turkey?” The property websites you browse will tell how how fantastic it is and will make you believe that you will be arriving into Paradise personified! This is 50% true you will indeed have 300 days of sunshine a year, a swim in the sea/pool anytime you like between the months of May and October. Eat fabulous food for dirt cheap and drink local Turkish beer or Raki (local drink) for 3 times cheaper than at home! However if you are thinking of making Turkey your permanent home for 12 months of the year there are a few things to remember, primarily this is not like home - quite a lot of people sell up their homes in England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland and make the huge move to live the rest of their lives abroad and then realize that they are desperately homesick, the pace of living in Altinkum is slow and if that suits you then you have landed on your feet but if you are used to constantly having your children or grandkids popping in for visits, going to a shopping center for the day, heading to the cinema or the bowling alley, browsing around a book shop or listening to your favourite music in the many music shops at home then this is not the place for you! Some people make this mistake and then realize a place in the sun is not all its cut out to be. For every 2 people that settle into slow life with absolute ease there is 1 that simply can’t adjust.
What can I advise you in this instance? Well how about drive testing the place? I recently met a very nice lady from Liverpool who came over and rented a place for 6 months, she loved it here but was very relieved that she hadn’t packed up all her belongings and moved lock, stock and barrel over in one mad move. She took her time and checked the place out first (its very cheap to rent here long term) and the conclusion? Well she realized that she preferred her life in Liverpool surrounded by her long-term friends and her kids. However she will be back as she had developed a very soft spot for Altinkum but she’s going to rent and not buy!
As there are always two sides on a coin there are loads of people here that would never ever consider going back to their old life and are ecstatically happy being part of the Altinkum scene.
Just to let you know this town is full to the brim with ex-pats from the British Isles and Ireland, so there is little reason to get too lonely even in the Winter months.
